The synagogue is located in the quarter of Old Cochin known as Jew Town, and is the only one of the seven synagogues in the area still in use. The complex has four buildings. It was built adjacent to the Mattancherry Palace Temple on the land gifted to the Malabari Yehuden community by the Raja of Kochi, Rama Varma. The Mattancherry Palace temple and the Mattancherry synagogue share a common wall.

Proceed to St. Francis Church originally built in 1503, is the oldest European church in India and has great historical significance as a mute witness to the European colonial struggle in the subcontinent. The Portuguese explorer, Vaco da Gama, died in Kochi in 1524 when he was on his 3rd visit to India. His body was originally buried in this church, but after fourteen years his remains were removed to Lisbon.

Proceed to Dutch Palace. The palace was constructed by the Portuguese and presented to the then Rajah of Kochi, Veera Kerala Varma. The Rajahs of Kerala’s made subsequent renovations of the palace, giving it a Hindu texture. In fact, it has become one of the best testimonies of the Hindu Temple Art.

Proceed to the Chinese Fishing Nets also known as Cheena vala are fixed land installations for an unusual form of fishing — shore operated lift nets.  They are mostly found in the Indian state of Kerala. Huge mechanical contrivances hold out horizontal nets of 20 m or more across. Each structure is at least 10 m high and comprises a cantilever with an outstretched net suspended over the sea and large stones suspended from ropes as counterweights at the other end. Each installation is operated by a team of up to six fishermen.
